  • The biggest ski area in the Nagano prefecture's resort-studded Hakuba Valley and arguably the best single resort in Japan. As well as offering splendid mountain scenery, some challenging terrain and longer-than-average runs, Happo-one is one of the prettiest ski villages in the country. With skiing up to 1,830m, a vertical drop of more than 1,070m, and some 35 lifts, resort has a good mix of terrain. Quick access to other ski areas in the valley, including Sunalpina Sanosaka, Iwatake, Hakuba 47 or Goryu-Toomi.

  • One of the most frenetic resorts in the northern Japanese Alps. Dominated by the Naeba Prince, the largest ski hotel in the world, with a shopping arcade, a Sega amusement area, a health centre and more than 40 restaurants, including one that stays open all night. Heavy weekend crowds. 53 runs, 34 lifts, impressive terrain park.

  • Located about 2.5 hours drive from Sapporo or Chitose Airport. This really is the place to be if you're into winter sports. Niseko is made up of several resorts; the 5 largest beiing: Hanazono, Kogen, Alpen, Higashiyama, Niseko Annupuri. Their lifts all join up just below the peak of Mt Annupuri. This makes it easy to traverse form one to the other.

  • Shiga Kogen's neighbour, refreshingly old-world. The skiing comprises 33km of slopes served by a large network of 30 lifts, including two modern gondolas. The area is satisfyingly varied with some steep pitches as well as number of mild, nicely groomed slopes. Mountain restaurants are plentiful (little Western food available though).

  • Alive with skiers in winter and early spring, the area is one of Japan's largest ski resorts with 21 ski slopes. Shiga Kogen Heights was the venue for the giant slalom, slalom, combined slalom and snowboard giant slalom events during the 1998 Winter Olympics. #1 ski resort in Japan for size, facilities and equipment. Nearby ski areas of Mt. Yakebitai, Gorin Kogen, Myoko Suginohara, Tsubame Onsen.

  • The Niseko ski area (300-1309m) is located just 120km south-west of Sapporo. The journey from Chitose International Airport takes approximately 2 to 2.5 hours by coach and all tour operators in Niseko offer connections from the Airport to Niseko. Ski area offers 35 Chairlifts and 3 Gondolas, 1009m of vertical drop.
