  • Mostly beginner to early-intermediate skiing on several diferent, mainly short and mildish slopes with a vertical drop up to 200m. Situated north of Vrchlabi, south of Spindl. For more advanced terrain go to Herlikovice; Vitkovice, Benecko and Vrchlabi are good for timid beginners and families with kids. Not the best snow record. 550m-1,018m.

Good nursery skiing and snowtubing at Novako skipark right in the village. Convenient access to other neighbouring resorts of Klinovec (5km) and German Fichtelberg (3km). Extensive cross-country trails. Snowsure relative to local standards, 850m-1,135m altitude.

Nicely set in magnificent scenery of Jeseniky range, south of the town of Jesenik, NW of Karlova Studanka, NE of Sumperk. Good range of off-slope facilities, great and extensive cross-country trails. Ski school, rental shop, decent accommodation right on the slopes, night skiing operation, snowboarders welcome. 840m-1,165m altitude.

A bit more various nearby skiable terrain of Tanvaldsky Spicak resort only a couple of km away. Little to entertain experts here. 520m-650m altitude.

  • Beginner to early-intermediates skiing on mild, north- and west-facing slopes in Destne, north of Rychnov, east of Hradec Kralove. 6.5km of skiing on 7 runs, served by 6 surface lifts. Very erratic snow record, nothing to do off the slopes. 610m-910m altitude. Neighbouring Polish ski resort Zieleniec only a couple of km away.

  • According to Czech standards fair-sized ski resort with good network of mainly intermediate NW-facing slopes of Mt Certak. Charming village setting, good snow record. 9km of skiable terrain at 650m-1,020m altitude, night skiing operation, good ski schools, number of rental shops. Extensive cross-country trails. Lively nightlife - though it's easily avoided if you prefer peace. Located north of Rokytnice, near the Polish borderline.

  • 10km of tree-lined skiing and snowboarding at eastern part of Krkonose in the little spa town of Janske Lazne, NW of Trutnov, east of Vrchlabi. 500m-1,260m altitude. The longest red run of Cerna Hora rolls down 3km with a respectable vertical drop of 560m. Night skiing, smooth grooming, good children's amenities, cross-country trails.

  • Smaller ski resort near Trinec, east of Frydek-Mistek, SE of Ostrava, offering 3.5lm of mild, partly wooded slopes, ideal for beginners and families. Nothing to really impress black cruisers here. XC skiing, good selection of off-slope facilities. 886m-1,000m.

  • Popular year-round resort on southern outskirts of Liberec, within easy reach of its public transport system. Reasonable variety of 7 north-facing pistes, fairly good lifts. Lots of off-slope facilities, vibrant nightlife, conveniet access to several nearby ski areas. Altitude 540-1000m.

Lovely setting, good snow reliability (relative to local standards), lively nightlife, night skiing, snowboarding, number of pretty good hotels. 8km of runs served by 11 lifts, good XC trails. Little to challenge experts here. 830m-1,180m altitude.

Offering easier cruising at Studenov and a bit more advanced on mostly treed slopes of Lysa Hora at Horni Domky. Efficient lift system, yet weekend queues seem unavoidable.

  • By all means the best, most popular and biggest ski resort in the country with skiing on opposite-facing Svaty Petr/Plane and Medvedin slopesides. Altogether there is 25km of skiable terrain of all grades. Great XC trails at Horni Misecky, night skiing, a host of rental and tuning shops, ski schools, snowboarding terrain park. Very lively apres-ski scene. Snow record not bad at all. During high season annoyingly crowded. 720m-1,270m.

  • 802m skiable hill with 8 tree-lined, north-facing, mostly narrow runs, with the longest one rolling 1,450m and 280m vertical. Snow record not particularly good. Located at Albrechtice near Tanvald and Desna, 30min drive from Liberec or Jablonec, roughly 90min north-east of Prague. 540m - 800m altitude, weekend lift lines.

  • 4.5km of mainly intermediate, tree-lined, day & night skiing 20km north of Usti nad Labem, west of Decin. 7 groomed slopes served by 6 lifts, good nursery amenities, unreliable snow cover. Counting nearby cities of Usti and Teplice in, lots of off-slope diversions and nightlife anything from deadly dull to rowdy. 600m-796m altitude.

  • Very well known cross-country resort with lovely skirunning trails, offering 6km of mild, sunny slopes, too. Located 15km west of Vimperk, south of Kasperske Hory, east of Zelezna Ruda. 9 lifts, night skiing operation, artificial snowmaking. 890m-1,120m.

  • According to Czech standards vast ski area with extensive, tree-lined slopes of all grades. Totalling 16km of fragmented skiing on 17 runs inconveniently spread over Spicak, Ruda, Brcalnik and Hojsova Straz. Weekend crowds on most popular runs, unreliable snow cover. Limited off-slope facilities, lively nightlife in Ruda. 860m-1,202m.
